Two people sustained major injuries in a crash on Interstate 10 in the Cabazon Pass Monday evening after a set of wheels detached from a tractor-trailer traveling on the opposite side of the freeway.
According to KESQ News Channel 3, the crash was reported at 5:34 p.m. on the eastbound side of I-10 near the Malki Road exit in Cabazon.
“Preliminary investigation indicates a semi/tractor-trailer was traveling on I-10 eastbound when a tandem set of wheels/tires became detached from the axle,” read a Facebook post detailing the crash from CHP – San Gorgonio Pass. “The wheel/tires continued eastbound before bouncing over the center divider wall and landing directly on top of a Subaru that was traveling westbound.”
The two occupants of the Subaru were hospitalized with major injuries as a result of the accident. They are expected to survive.
It is unclear at this time what caused the the wheels to detach from the semi’s axle, but according to CHP, a “thorough inspect” is set to follow at the agency’s Desert Hills Inspection Facility.
