On Friday, Dec. 25, 2020 at approximately 2:16 p.m., officers from the Pasadena Police Department responded to the 1000 block of Wheeler Alley regarding the report of shots fired. Officers arrived on scene and discovered a shooting victim at the nearby Pasadena Fire Station located at Fair Oaks Avenue and Hammond Street. Paramedics transported the 35-year-old male victim, who had sustained life-threatening injuries, to a local hospital. Officers found evidence of a shooting in the alley during their canvassing.

Pasadena Police Detectives responded to the scene and commenced their investigation. Preliminarily, it was learned the victim had walked into the alley moments before being shot by the suspect(s). During their investigation, Detectives established several investigative leads and through their diligent efforts, were able to identify persons of interest who were likely responsible for the shooting.

On Thursday, Jan. 14, with the assistance of the Pacific Southwest Regional Task Force team, detectives served arrest and search warrants at various locations. Additional evidence was collected during the searches, which connected two individuals to the shooting. Both suspects were subsequently arrested.

On Tuesday, the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review. The following charges were filed against the suspects:

  • Alberto Esparza, a 26-year-old Pasadena resident, was charged with one count of attempted murder. Esparza’s bail amount is $1,050,000.
  • Victor Zamora Macias, a 33-year-old Alhambra resident, was charged with one count of attempted murder and his bail was set at $2,000,000.

Pasadena Police is asking anyone with information about this case to call (626) 744-4241.
