SinceNov. 6, there have been four incidents in Monrovia involving gun violence.

OnNov. 6, at 7:20 p.m., several calls were received by the Monrovia PoliceDepartment (MPD) reporting shots fired at Recreation Park, near Shamrock andOlive avenues. When officers arrived at the scene, they found one victim withgunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatmentand is recovering. This investigation is ongoing, but MPD has announced thatthis incident is gang related.

On Nov. 29, at 1:29 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of East Maple reported shots heard in the area. When officers responded, they located a victim who sustained two gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Evidence from this shooting was recovered at the scene and detectives continues to conduct the investigation.

On the evening of Dec. 5, two incidents occurred. At approximately 9:47 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Duarte Road regarding a “shots heard” call in the area. Upon arrival, officers found shell casings. While investigating this incident, officers received another “shots heard” call for the 400 block of West Huntington Drive. When officers responded to this call, they found two male adults who sustained gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment, and both are recovering with non-life-threatening injuries. Currently, both investigations are ongoing.

In speaking with city counterparts in the region, there is an increasing trend in violence, and many estimate the trends follow eight months of a global pandemic, increased financial instability and/or increased unemployment. As the City of Monrovia continues handling calls for service, there is a realization that many people are struggling. The city’s websites has a list of support and crisis services for those who need it.

Those who are interested in the total number of calls for service received, the number of actual investigations that resulted and highlights of incidents and events, are encouraged to view the Monrovia Police Department’s weekly reports.
