(Photo by Sarah Reingewirtz, Pasadena Star News/SCNG) Pasadena’s anti-mansionization ordinances will soon apply to every single family neighborhood in the city, following a City Council approval on Monday afternoon, Oct. 19, when council members unanimously asked city staff to prepare an ordinance to limit the size of new homes and renovations to keep them in line with their surrounding neighborhoods. Under the new ordinance — expected to pass by the end of the year or so — anyone trying to build a new house or make their existing home larger will have to limit themselves to 35% above the median square footage of other homes in the neighborhood. If they exceed that benchmark, two things will happen: Their neighbors will get a notice from the city telling them about the project, and it will trigger a whole host of review processes from the city’s Planning Department, including public hearings.
