On Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020 at approximately 6:04 p.m., Pasadena police officers responded to the intersection of Lake Avenue and Washington Boulevard regarding a car to car shooting. Officers arrived on scene and located a vehicle which had been struck by gunfire. At the time of the shooting, the vehicle was occupied by three victims including a 29-year-old male, a 10-year-old and a 1-year-old.

According to police, preliminary investigation revealed the victim’s vehicle was stopped and was facing east on Washington Boulevard at the intersection of Lake Avenue when the suspect vehicle pulled alongside. The suspect exited his vehicle, walked up to the victim’s vehicle and fired multiple bullets from a handgun. The suspect reentered his vehicle and fled the area. Fortunately, none of the victims were injured.

Detectives of the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) assumed the investigation from the onset and pursued all investigative leads. The results of CIU’s investigation have led to the suspect’s identity and on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2020 a warrant was obtained for his arrest, the department said in a press release.

The suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Leonard Ray Norman Jr., a Pasadena resident.

On Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020 officers from the Ridgecrest Police Department (CA) detained Norman during a scheduled DUI checkpoint and took him into custody without incident. Pasadena detectives responded to Ridgecrest and took custody of Norman.

On Tuesday, CIU detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for review. Norman was charged with one count of attempted murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon (firearm). His bail has been set at $1,200,000.

The investigation of this incident revealed this was not a random act of violence; the adult victim and suspect know each other. No further details regarding the possible motive were released by police.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Pasadena Police 24/7 at (626) 744-4241.
