Despite the warm weather, beaches along Long Beach’s and the South Bay’s coastline remain closed amid the coronavirus pandemic Saturday, April 25, 2020. (Hunter Lee, Press-Telegram/SCNG) Another Long Beach resident, a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions, has died from coronavirus-related causes, officials announced Thursday, Sept. 3. The city’s death toll is now 223. Long Beach also reported 87 new coronavirus cases. There have been 10,815 cases identified in the city since the pandemic began. But about 9,850 people — or 91% of those who have tested positive — have since recovered. There were 59 Long Beach residents in hospitals with the virus on Thursday. Long Beach’s positive testing rate was 4.8% on Thursday, about the same as the previous day, while its case rate per 100,000 people fell from 9.5 to 8.1. To move ahead with further reopenings, the state requires counties to have a positive testing rate at or below 8% and a case rate per 100,000 people at or below 7 — and for the numbers to remain there for at least two weeks.
