What’s Canceled and What Isn’t This Summer in Monrovia

Given that large gatherings continue to be prohibited to slow the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health and safety of the community, the City of Monrovia has modified the 2020 summer events. This summer, the City of Monrovia is holding its first-ever decorating contest to celebrate Independence Day, launching new virtual recreation classes and activities and welcoming back the Monrovia Street Fair & Market.

Monrovia Today

The summer edition of the MonroviaToday will be available online in the first week of July. Fitness classes,dance lessons, academic support programs and much more will be offered toresidents and community members to virtually participate in during the summerseason. To make access to virtual programs, this year the Monrovia Today willbe digital and residents will not receive a physical copy. In the upcomingweek, a postcard should arrive in homes with a QR code to scan, leading to thedigital Monrovia Today. Registration for programs, events and classes willbegin on July 6.

Monrovia Street Fair & Market

The Monrovia Street Fair & Marketwill return on July 3 at 5 p.m. In order to keep in compliance with physicaldistancing protocols, the Monrovia Street Fair & Market will implement afew changes.

The market will be condensed andlocated on Myrtle Avenue between Olive Avenue and Walnut Avenue. To avoidcrowding, a limited number of visitors may occupy the marketplace at one time.Visitors may be asked to wait when the market has reached capacity. Inaddition, there will be one entry in, at Olive Avenue, and one exit out. Thosevisiting will see a temporary discontinuation of the kids’ play area andentertainment, and the addition of hand wash and hand sanitizer stations.

4th of JulyCelebration 

There will be no fireworks show this 4thof July in Library Park. For this year’s celebration, resident are encouragedto take a few minutes to experience a portion of the 2019 Fireworks SpectacularShow. This video will also give thanks to Monrovia’s Blue Star Families andshow appreciation to those serving the country. The video will air on Saturday,July 4, at 5 p.m. It can be viewed on the city’s website, Facebook page andYouTube.

The City of Monrovia will also host a4th of July Home Decorating Contest and an Old Town MonroviaWindow Decorating Contest. All Monrovians are encouraged to break out theirbunting, American Flags, banners and balloons and show they are “MonroviaStrong.” To register for the competition, visit the City of Monrovia’swebsite. Judging for the competition will take place on July 1 andJuly 2, with the winners announced and maps made available on July 3.

All fireworks are prohibited in theCity of Monrovia.

Summer Concerts in the Park

Concerts in the Park, held at StationSquare and Library Park last year, will not be hosted this summer. Instead, thecommunity is invited to tune into Sunday Funday Flashback Concerts, beginningon July 12 through Aug. 23. Each Sunday, the City of Monrovia will share aconcert from the past for the community to enjoy. Tune into KGEM-TV channel 3(Spectrum) or channel 87.3 (Giggle), at 5 p.m., to watch the concerts, orstream the concerts on YouTube.

Movies in the Park

The Community Services Departmentwill host the 2020 Movies in the Park, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. ondesignated days. Families are encouraged to pack lawn chairs or blankets, sitback, and enjoy a movie underneath the stars.

Reservations will be required toattend. All events will have designated family reservation spots to ensurephysical distancing to keep guests safe and healthy. Those interested cansign-up by clicking on the links in the digital Monrovia Today.

Movie Schedule:

  • July 18 – DetectivePikachu.
  • July 25 – Little Rascals.
  • August 1 – Frozen 2.
  • August 8 – Toy Story 4.

For the health and safety of thecommunity and employees, those attending Movies in the Park are asked to followthe guidelines established by the Los Angeles County Department of PublicHealth, including wearing a face covering and remaining 6 feet away from thoseoutside of their own household. Additional restrictions and/or cancellation mayapply.

Comfy Camping at Home FamilyAdventure

The Comfy Camping at Home Family Adventure is a six-week challenge.Registered participants will earn merit badges pins for each completedchallenge. In addition, participants will receive special access to uniquestory times and activities. Those interested can register by clicking on thelinks in the digital Monrovia Today.

The program will run from July 25 toAug. 29. 

  • Challenge 1: Build your tent or fort.
  • Challenge 2: Take a community hike / scavenger hunt. 
  • Challenge 3: Share your scrumptious camping dinner.
  • Challenge 4: Create an ooey gooey goodness s’more.
  • Challenge 5: Star gazing discovery.
  • Challenge 6: Insect safari.
