Foot Locker Awards Arcadia Student With $20K College Scholarship

Arcadia High School senior Andre Yeung was awarded $20,000 by Foot Locker as part of the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program that annually recognizes 20 students nationwide for exceptional leadership in the classroom and community, as well as for achievements in sports.

Acrossthe country, school closures continue to impact millions of students, parents,and families, including student-athletes who are no longer able to experiencethe moments they’ve dreamed about and worked toward. On May 21, Andre Yeung andother selected finalists joined a virtual discussion, facilitated by contentcreator and media personality Tony Mui, to connect with one another about howthe COVID-19 pandemic is impacting their lives and communities. The robustdiscussion explored how students are coping, and provided an opportunity forthem to share words of advice to their fellow high school seniors. 

The finalists were then surprised with a celebratory reveal by NBA player Collin Sexton, who announced that they were all actually winners of the 2019/2020 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Scholarship. “I know it’s been tough for high school seniors everywhere, who have had to miss out on major milestones,” said the Cleveland Cavaliers guard. “I’m honored to team up with Foot Locker to help reward these student athletes for all of their hard work and dedication, especially during this time.” View the virtual discussion on Foot Locker’s YouTube channel.

Recognizedfor his academic excellence and strong leadership skills both in sports andwithin his community, Yeung joined the program’s eight previous classes of FootLocker Scholar Athletes, which represents 180 total scholarship recipientssince the program’s inception in 2011, to pursue their college educations.

Yeung has been on an ice hockey travel team since age 5 and has a reputation for winning puck battles with his agility, oftentimes against players twice his size.

An engineer and scientist at heart, he is always looking for solutions that tap into underutilized resources to make a positive impact in the world. He founded a nationally recognized 501(c)3 nonprofit, Fruit for Homeless, which has collected and distributed 40,000 pounds of otherwise wasted backyard fruits to serve 50,000 low-income families and homeless individuals.

Yeung’s greatest accomplishment is contributing to a research project on genetically-engineered tomatoes, which has been awarded a four-year grant from NASA. He was chosen as one of the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search 2020, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors. Yeung is a Congressional Award Gold Medalist, National Merit Scholarship Finalist, and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He has earned 1500 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT, as well as maintained a 3.91 GPA.

Yeung plans to see his scientific project through to completion in college and, in the near future, lead the force to create a purpose-driven biotech startup.
