

LastWednesday, the Planning Commission approved the commencement of hoteloperation at the Aztec Hotel in conjunction with room service (food andalcohol) provided by the Mayan Bar and Grill restaurant. Although, therestaurant and commercial storefronts are occupied with businesses, the hotelhas not operated since approximately 2011.
TheAztec Hotel was built in 1925 and designed by the notable architect RobertStacy-Judd. The building is generally considered Stacy-Judd’s most significantdesign. In 1978, the Aztec Hotel was designated a National Historic Landmarkand was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property waslater designated a Monrovia Local Historic Landmark (HL-10) on Dec. 16, 2003,and a Mills Act Contract (MA-56) was also approved. These designationsunderscore the fact that the Aztec Hotel is deemed a unique and importanthistoric resource both locally and nationally.
Thehotel includes 36 private rooms with baths and eight one-room studioapartments. In addition to the hotel, the property is home to the MayanBar and Grill and four commercial storefronts.
TheAztec Hotel plans to reopen its doors in the next several months, according tothe city manager.
