Idled since March 27 due to concerns relating to the COVID-19 virus, Santa Anita Park returned to action on Friday, and the lone filly in the race, She’s So Special, marched to a 1 ½ length victory in the day’s first race, a 5 ½ furlong turf allowance. Ridden by Flavien Prat and trained by Peter Miller, the 3-year-old daughter of Hard Spun got five furlongs on turf in 1:02.82.
“It’s great to finally be back,” said Prat, a winner of last year’s Kentucky Derby, via disqualification aboard Country House. “It’s been a rough time, but I’m glad we are back in business.”
With many days of spare time and social distancing, did Prat feel he was fit enough?
“There’s nothing like riding races, but I’ve been working out a lot, so I should be okay.”
All jockeys and employees are currently fitted with masks and color-coded bracelets, parts of a myriad of health and safety protocols that are being observed in accordance with the Los Angeles County Health Department.
With the exception of Memorial Day, Santa Anita will run on a Friday through Sunday schedule through closing day, June 21.
