When it became clear that the coronavirus pandemic would lead to shortages of supplies for local organizations, the Arcadia Chinese Association (ACA) started raising funds to donate medical supplies to local hospitals, firefighters, police and Foothill Unity Center. With support from the Arcadia High School Chinese Parents Boost Club (AHSCPBC), ACA raised $35,811 from local businesses, individuals, students and parents alike in less than 10 days.

With ACA President Jamie Lee’s remote coordination from Taiwan, Connie Liao, one of ACA’s vice presidents, lead numerous ACA and AHSCPBC members as the team navigated a complicated and challenging sourcing process to procure personal protective equipment (PPE) such as N95 masks, protections gowns, medical gloves, and no-contact thermometers.

In the drizzling rain on Tuesday, April 7, representatives from ACA and AHSCPBC delivered a PPE shipment to Methodist Hospital. Michael Driebe, president of the Arcadia Methodist Hospital Foundation and staff happily accepted the donations on behalf of the hospital.

That same afternoon ACA sent another batch of PPE donations to the Arcadia Police Department. TG Metzger and Glenn Oyoung of Arcadia Police Foundation received the donations on behalf of the Arcadia Police Department with much appreciation.

In the following week, ACA delivered donations to Foothill Unity Center, USC Medical Center, Huntington Hospital, Garfield Medical Center and Kaiser Permanent Baldwin Park.
