Monrovia Baseball Wins Yet Again
After 5-1 victory over Marshall, Monrovia baseball team record advances to 7-1
It has been a season of glory for Wildcats baseball so far. Heading into their match against Marshall on Thursday, the Wildcats had won six of their seven games. They had been outscoring their opponents 72-16. According to the Southern Section Divison 4 Standings, they rank third amongst 56 teams. They looked to continue this success against Marshall on home field.
The game began with Marshall taking an early lead. In the top of the first, Marshall’s Liam Harrison, who entered the game as the starting pitcher, brought in the first run for the Barristers. However, that is all the Wildcats gave up throughout the matchup as Marshall was unable to add onto their run total. Once the seventh inning came to a close, the Barristers were only able to acquire two hits.
Pitching for the Wildcats was phenomenal throughout. Junior Chantz Powers started the game, throwing three innings and recording three strikeouts compared to only two hits. Following this, the bullpen for Monrovia was excellent, finishing the game by not giving up a hit and adding three more strikeouts to their final team total.
Despite the early score, the home side was able to gain momentum just minutes later, as in the bottom of the first the Wildcats put three runs on the board. While the offense didn’t add any runs throughout the next few innings, ultimately the Wildcats scored two extra runs in the fifth, giving Monrovia five runs once the game came to an end.
Junior catcher Matthew Delgado was the player of the game, going two for two at the plate and also brought in a game-leading two runs. His average on the season has now advanced to .591, and his RBI count is at 11. Senior Sebastian Sanchez also had a strong outing, going three for three and earning one RBI.
The season numbers for these Wildcats have been otherworldly. So far the team’s batting average this season has been .409, with their on-base percentage being .504. Both of these stats for Monrovia are well above the national average. But offense hasn’t been the only highlight of their season. Pitching has also been remarkable, and the team’s total ERA is an outstanding 1.78.
Juniors Henry Williams and Steven Escarcega have led the team in innings pitched with 13, and both share a 1.62 ERA. The team has shown incredible success on both aspects of the field and heading into Rio Hondo League play they will hope to continue this prevalence.
The Wildcats next contest will be on Tuesday against Rio Hondo league opponent San Marino, with the game taking place at San Marino High School. First pitch is set to take place at 3:30 p.m.
