On Wednesday, Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) Superintendent Katherine Thorossian released a statement addressing coronavirus concerns.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) warned Americans on Tuesday that they foresee outbreaks of the novel coronavirus in the U.S. The CDC urged individuals, schools, and businesses to take preventative steps and to prepare for the potential spread of the virus

Dr. Thorossian first assuaged some fears: “While concern is appropriate, the U.S. is not facing a pandemic. By following preventative behaviors, the CDC indicates we can limit the impact of the virus on our school community, allowing educators and students to focus on instruction.”

In the statement she reminded everyone of what can be done to limit contracting and spreading the virus:

  • “Hygiene: Make sure everyone washes their hands thoroughly, covers their coughs and sneezes, and stays home if they notice symptoms. Students with fevers should not return to school until they are fever-free for 24 hours.
  • “Limit contact: The CDC urges people to avoid close contact with people who are sick and to avoid touching our eyes, nose and mouth.
  • “Clean spaces: Clean and disinfect surfaces and frequently touched objects.
  • “Stay updated: The CDC is constantly updating its website, including accurate information on confirmed cases in the U.S.
  • “Masks: The CDC has indicated people who are well should not rely on facemasks to protect themselves from any respiratory disease, although they are advised for health care workers. Masks also are effective at limiting the spread of the virus from infected individuals.”

MUSD will continue to monitor the situation.
