The Wildcats continue winning ways after 63-46 victory

With the regular season vastly approaching in January, Monrovia High School’s boy’s basketball team executed wonderfully on Dec. 12 against the Rio Hondo Prep Kares in yet another preseason game. The 63-46 win allowed the Wildcats to advance to a 6-5 overall record, and with the contest taking place on home court they advanced to 3-0 inside their own gym.

According to the MaxPreps basketball California state rankings, the Kares are nearly 100 ranked spots ahead of Monrovia. Yet the Wildcats outplayed their opponent throughout the entire four-quarter contest.

The first quarter was a fast offensive start for the Wildcats, as they outscored the Kares 17-14. Monrovia’s defense in the second quarter became the strength of their play in the second, as they only allowed their opponent to score 10 points by the end of the quarter. Because of this, Monrovia headed to their locker room with the 30-24 lead.

Once again it was the defense that impressed in the third quarter, as they mimicked their second-quarter efforts with yet another 10-point against performance. The offense took advantage of the defensive prowess, as their efficient scoring and ball movement allowed them to extend their lead by six extra points.

With a 12-point lead, Monrovia added insult to injury with yet another quarter in which they outscored the Kares. With Rio Hondo Prep scoring 12 points, while the Wildcats answered with 17 more points of their own, the final 63-46 result allowed the home side to leave their building with their sixth victory of the 2019-20 season.

After a strong victory against the Duarte Falcons in which they blew out their opponent by 39 points, the victory last Thursday allowed them to win their second straight contest. The Wildcats will have a short week-long break and will look to make it three straight against the Cathedral Phantoms on Dec. 26 in which they will compete in the San Gabriel Valley Classic Tournament.

Although these games are essentially seen as practice matchups before they begin Rio Hondo League play, each win is considered a great accomplishment for Samuel Sheeck Morris’ squad. And as they continue to play these preseason games, this experienced squad, which shows 12 seniors on their roster, are hoping to continue building and developing team chemistry.
