Monrovia Basketball Continues Preseason With Win Over Bellflower

Wildcats 79-34 win gives them a 2-3 start to preseason
With the basketball regular season vastly approaching, Monrovia continued their preseason play on Monday, Nov. 25 against the Bellflower Buccaneers. It was a home non-conference game, and it was their second home contest so far in this young season.
Coming off the 11th Annual Spartan Classic basketball tournament in which the team went 1-3 and averaged almost 60 points a game, the Wildcats earned their second win of their season by defeating the Buccaneers 79-34. Their 79 points were the highest the team has scored in a contest so far in their 2019-20 campaign.
Bellflower, who entered the game coming off a strong victory against the Hawthorne Cougars, were outmatched from the beginning. Monrovia’s defense was steady from the initial minutes, and the Wildcats only gave up 13 points by the end of the first eight minutes. They responded with yet another strong defensive quarter in the second as they gave up only 14 points.
Along with this, the offense was also efficient in the first half and they scored 22 points in both the first and second quarters. Heading into the locker rooms, the Wildcats were ahead at the half by a score of 44-27.
The Wildcats entered the second half and responded with their most dominant quarter yet, scoring a whopping 28 points and only allowing the Buccaneers to earn six points. With the game essentially won by Monrovia, both coaches placed the reserved players in the fourth quarter to give them strong minutes, and when the final whistle blew the home crowd was able to celebrate the team’s commanding 45-point triumph.
Senior shooting guard Grant Dickinson was named the Monrovia Basketball Player of the Game, as he was both the defensive and offensive leader on the court for these Wildcats. Dickinson has been a consistent key to Monrovia’s two early wins, and in order for this squad to maintain a strong run throughout this season expect to see Dickinson’s name at the top of their stat sheets week after week.
Monrovia basketball will continue their season on Monday, Dec. 2 against the St. Paul Swordsmen, who have started the season with a 1-5 record, in the Blue Pride Classic Tournament. Head coach Samuel-Sheeck Morris and his team will continue tournament play on Dec. 4 against the Wilson Wildcats.
