Low Voter Turnout in Monrovia’s Municipal Election

With 21,932 registered voters, this election turnout is one of the lowest

Voters in Monrovia turned out in low numbers, but those who did passed Measure K. The vote result was: 2,273 (or 62.89%) voting yes and 1,341 (or 37.11%) voting no. These are considered preliminary results right now, according to Monrovia City Clerk Alice Atkins, as there are still 100 provisional ballots and 526 vote-by-mail ballots (as of Wednesday afternoon) to process and verify before counting and certifying. However, these 626 ballots are not enough to change the result.
Currently, with the results posted online,Monrovia turnout was approximately 16.5%. This will increase (toapproximately 19% with the additional 626 votes not yet counted) as theycontinue processing. However, as residents point out, there was only one itemof the ballot.
Mayor Tom Adams submitted the followingstatement: “I am thankful to Monrovians for their continued trust and support. Hopefullythis will keep the County on hold and we can start to meet with the communityto see how we should best use these funds. I know the council willcontinue to be good stewards of the public’s treasure.”
The mayor commented that the next step would bethe appointment of an Advisory Board, then the beginnings of communitymeetings.
