South Pasadena’s creative community and local businesses team up to celebrate fall with another fun and family friendly “Neighborhood Night-on-the-Town” on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 4 to 9 p.m. Sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and produced by SPACE, the South Pasadena Arts Crawl welcomes people of all ages to this free event which offers gallery exhibitions, art activities, live music, open houses, food and drink specials, and sales throughout the business district. Mission Street, and adjacent blocks, will come to life with fall-themed festivities.

This Arts Crawl is “bigger and better” than past quarterly events in two ways. Chamber of Commerce president, Laurie Wheeler, says that the Crawl will “start at 4 p.m. instead of 5 p.m. because the wider time range allows for people to have the opportunity to take advantage of all the activities the event offers.” She said, “The business district merchants are excited about the earlier start time, since many of their customers were disappointed to miss out on all the fun due to prior commitments.”

Another first for the Arts Crawl is the placement of a live music venue, the Gold Line Stage, near the South Pasadena Metro Station, presented by the South Pasadena Music Center and Conservatory. The center’s creative director, Michael Campagna, has programmed a slate of local music acts – Sky Rocket, J.T., Chernobyl, Day Job and the Buzzrites – to perform from 4 to 8 p.m.

The streets will be humming with other live music offerings including singer-songwriters Dave Clausen and Kathy Woolsey performing 5 – 6 p.m. at Reimagine Your Home, and the popular Mission Street Music Club, hosted by the Dinosaur Farm and Kidd’s Jewelry Heist, starting at 8 p.m. in their back parking lot. Pascale Music Institute presents members of Los Angeles’ Children’s Orchestra (who performed on “America’s Got Talent”) at Jones Coffee from 4 – 4:45 p.m., followed by the Juniors String Quartet performing until 7 p.m. Handle Gifts hosts a performance by singer/songwriter Alicia Blue, along with an art exhibit by Maureen Maki, and Griffin’s at Kinsale features the local band “The Drive,” at 9 p.m.

Other event highlights include:

SPARC @ City Hall presents an evening inspired by Lorraine Triolo’s book “People Who Look Like Art.” In the courtyard, visit a photo corner with crazy cool hats and artist pop-ups, while the gallery hosts closing receptions for Deborah Van Der Zaag and David Johnson’s shows. SPARC @ the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce celebrate the opening of the “The Human Form,” work by artist Yuki Toy, with a reception from 6 – 9 p.m.

The South Pasadena Library and LitFest Pasadena present COMBCHELLA journaling workshops with Camari Carter-Hawkins, from 5 – 6 p.m. and 7- 8 p.m. In between workshops, participants are encouraged to decorate and design a blank journal provided by the Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library (materials included).

Teaching artist Lisa Duardo provides an all ages art activity featuring Day of the Dead prints on bandanas as well as a pumpkin-themed craft. Award winning chalk artist Ronny Johnson will create a Halloween themed street mural along the event route. Merchants also get into the Halloween spirit as Hotbox Vintage hosts a pumpkin decorating activity and Sugarmynt Gallery celebrates the “Halloween” series of movies with a “Haddonfield 8” exhibit and a film screening (for an admission fee.) Dual Crossroads offers a Mystic Fair from 1:30 – 8:30 p.m. featuring tarot readers, chakra healing, and “Soul Painting.”

The Art Crawl’s Artisans’ Alley, which will take place on Meridian Ave. between Mission and El Centro Streets, has expanded to include 17 vendors offering art, unique gifts, jewelry, accessories and more. Artisans include Bellagazoo, Charming Devil Studios, David Llera, Dragonfish Handmade Goods, Easton Garden Designs, Gifts from My Garden, Hoja, Karen Wickham, La Maja Art, Lepix Creations, Orpheus, Precious Few on Earth, SOPA Studios, Stephanie Stein Designs, Urban Heiress ÀLM and Wato Soap.

Foodies and those wanting to imbibe can start the afternoon of the Crawl at Mission Wines at their pre-event party with $5 beers on tap and $5 wines by the glass from 1 – 5 p.m. The Munch Company could be your next stop as they host a special taco and candlelight karaoke night inside from 5 – 8 p.m., along with a “shopper’s alley” outside, featuring a variety of artisans. Mamma’s Brick Oven Pizza’s new restaurant will adorn its walls with Denise Tanaka’s South Pasadena Middle School students’ colorful “Pet Portraits” exhibit. Food trucks such as Sticky Rice, Austyn’s Burgers and Stuffed Crepe offer a variety of food options along the event route. After the event, Gus’s BBQ hosts a late night happy hour from 9 p.m. until closing.

Other merchants and organizations offer activities, trunk shows and sales. Two Kids Coffee provides an all ages, black and white transfer printmaking activity, using images from your own digital photo camera. Kaldi Coffee and Tea exhibits the work of Jimi Martinez, who illustrated the Arts Crawl poster, and that of his students. Adobe Creative presents a glitter tattoo artist and balloon twisting fun while Ellen’s Silkscreening provides a coloring station for all ages. Alexandra Tsoukalam, a jewelry and accessory artist from Greece, will be at the Rue de Mimo boutique while Marz Gifts features Thai Hilltribe jewelry by Anantara and baked goods by Jess. Camille de Pedrini hosts a trunk show featuring Coast to Coast Vintage and a fun activity outside the store with “Balloons by Mimi,” featuring balloon art inspired by Jeff Koons’ sculptures from 5 – 8 p.m. The South Pasadena Historical Museum will offer docent led tours.

Event-goers can park in the Mission/Meridian Parking lot (north of Mission Street, on Meridian), and walk to the more than 30 participating shops, boutiques and activities. The Metro Gold Line South Pasadena Station will put you right in the heart of the event.

The quarterly Arts Crawls are presented by the South Pasadena Chamber of Commerce, and produced by SPACE, to provide a showcase for artists and musicians and to highlight the city’s unique business district.
