Thursday, The PUSD Board of Education could approve the consolidation of Jefferson Elementary School’s Spanish Dual Language Immersion Program to Washington Elementary School and reconfigure Jefferson Elementary School’s boundaries to Longfellow Elementary, Norma Coombs Elementary and Webster Elementary schools; consolidation of Roosevelt Elementary School to Madison Elementary School; consolidation of Don Benito Fundamental Elementary School with boundaries redrawn to Norma Coombs Elementary and Webster Elementary schools; consolidation of Franklin Elementary School to Altadena Elementary School.

In addition to that, the Board may consider combining Jackson Elementary and Franklin Elementary schools by reconfiguring grade levels at Franklin Elementary School to grades K-2 only and Jackson Elementary School to grades 3-5 only.

In an email sent Tuesday, Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Interim Superintendent David Verdugo explained the reasoning behind the recommendations to close elementary schools in PUSD. “The recommendations are the result of a comprehensive review that began late last year to determine the number and location of schools that PUSD should operate in the long-term.” PUSD has struggled with lower enrollment rates and fiscal stability in the last few years.

The Thursday Board of Education meeting will be called to order at 4 p.m. inside the Elbie J. Hickambottom Board Room at 351 S. Hudson Ave. in Pasadena. In October, the Board will deliberate on recommendations for secondary schools.
