Monrovia Football Flexes its Muscles Against Alta Loma
By Nathan Foster
Monrovia’s varsity football team dominated Alta Loma on Friday night led by senior quarterback Nick Hernandez and senior running back Devon Mayes.
Hernandez lit up the Alta Loma defense for four touchdowns, completing 19 of 27 passes for 348 yards and no interceptions. Hernandez connected with five receivers on the night, including senior Mario Minor who caught six balls for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
Minor had the highlight of the night, catching an 89-yard bomb in the fourth quarter for a score, to put Monrovia up 34-0. Alta Loma would score just three minutes later, but it would be of no consequence as the game was nearly over.
Mayes also stood out for the Wildcats. Although he only had six carries, Mayes made the most of them and logged 146 yards on the ground, including a 65-yard touchdown run. That breaks down to an astounding 24.3 yards per carry. Mayes also caught three passes for 18 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Wildcats were led by senior Hunter Nicely, who had 10 tackles (nine solo, five for loss) and three sacks. Junior David Lopez also had a solid performance with five tackles (one solo) and a fumble recovery.
The Wildcats’ next game is an away contest against Los Altos in Hacienda Heights on Friday at 7 p.m.
