Is your vote safe?

Do elections still work? Many seem to worry their vote isn’t safe. The League of Women Voters Pasadena Area (LWVPA) will address that question and changes in LA County voting procedures at a free open forum on Sept. 5 at the Women’s City Club, located at 160 N. Oakland Ave., Pasadena. Registration is at 8:30 a.m. An optional breakfast at is at 9 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m.

The forum features two speakers: John Fuhrman, a recognized authority on political systems for 45 years, and Martha Zavala, chair of LWVPA’s voter service committee.

Zavala will discuss how changes to regional voting centers from neighborhood polling places could affect confidence not only in the primary elections in March but also the presidential election in November 2020.

Fuhrman will talk about threats to the vote from his experience as a member of the County Information Systems Commission and a leading member of ACT, a progressive organization promoting voter engagement in local, state and national elections.

He will pose several questions. Can our democracy stand up to those threats? Is there anything individuals can do? What will motivate people to action? What will move vast numbers of the electorate to even cast a vote?

Reservations are required for the breakfast priced at $25 and for an assured seat at the free forum. Register here or call the league office, (626) 798-0965.
