The Monrovia girls’ varsity volleyball team had a shaky start to the season, dropping their firsts two contests to La Salle and Torrance at the Lakewood Moulten Tournament on Saturday.

The Wildcats squared off against La Salle first, dropping the match 0-3 (17-25, 19-25, 13-25). Seniors Amber Dowell and Amber Shaw led the team with 13 kills and five blocks between the pair. Other leaders for the Wildcats included senior Anaya Berry with two aces, junior Julie Castaneda with 12 digs and sophomore Julia Mitchell with 15 assists.

Monrovia fared better in their second contest of the day, but still dropped the match 1-3 (25-15, 17-25, 22-25, 16-25) against Torrance. Again, Shaw paced the team with 10 kills. Other leaders included Castaneda with three aces and 11 digs, junior Siena Andrews with four blocks and Mitchell with 19 assists.

The Wildcats will look to rebound in their next contest at South Hills on Wednesday at 5 :30 p.m.
