Pasadenans Enjoy More Than Breakfast at First District Pancake Block Party

The annual First District Community Meeting and Pancake Breakfast Block Party brought many local residents together with government officials on a perfect summer morning at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena for breakfast and to learn about local resources available to the community.
Local residents were enjoyed a delicious complete pancake breakfast outside the beautiful south section of the golf course while listening to Rob Robinson’s band. Soon after enjoying breakfast, Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton greeted and thanked everyone in attendance and began the community meeting.
Also in attendance was Mayor Tornek who shared a few words, “Coming here this morning is such a wonderful thing because Pasadena is really about community. And, having people here in this beautiful Arroyo enjoying breakfast together and talking together with your families just hanging out is really the essence of what this city is about.” He closed his quick remarks by thanking Hampton for inviting him and advising everyone present to continue enjoying their morning.
There were several give away raffles and plenty of booths presenting valuable information regarding a particular organization’s services in the City of Pasadena.

Lawton Gray, principal of John Muir High School, was in attendance answering questions from local residents about the school. John Muir High School is home to the only early college magnet program in the Pasadena Unified School District. The school has formed a partnership with Pasadena City College to provide students with four yearlong programs granting students up to two years of transferable college credit while still attending high school. Some of the early college career-focused academies include arts, entertainment and media; business and entrepreneurship; and engineering and environmental science. This program could save parents an average of $1,500-$15,000 per year in tuition and fees because it is available to students for free. Great community resources such as the Pasadena Fire Department, Pasadena Police Department, and many more were part of this block party. Some organizations also took this opportunity to educate the community about local policies in the City of Pasadena.
The Pasadena Department of Transportation was among many services educating local residents on the “speed bump policy criteria.” If you advocate in your community for slowing down traffic in your neighborhood you may start by submitting a request to have speed bumps built in your area. However, the Pasadena Department of Transportation says community members must first consider six main criteria before submitting their request.
For example, the first criterion on their list of requirements is that the street must be classified as a local residential street and have a speed limit of 25 miles per hour or less. Another one is that 67% of residents on a residential street must support installation of speed bumps. Some exceptions may apply on a case-by-case basis but if you are concerned with high speed traffic in your area you may email dliu@cityofpasadena.net for a full version of the requirements.
AltaMed was also in attendance and was recognized by the City of Pasadena for its generous support of this year’s block party. Celebrating 50 years of service, AltaMed provided local residents with information on registering or updating their voter registration. AltaMed also educated the community about the Census 2020 and their involvement in helping everyone be counted. “We are happy to be here and get to know the great community of Pasadena and although we serve throughout the Los Angeles County area we are here to begin a relationship with the City of Pasadena and we thank Vice Mayor Tyron Hampton for letting us be part of this great event.” Robert Blackmon, civic engagement data analyst for AltaMed, shared with me that they are hosting several upcoming events celebrating their 50 years of growing healthy throughout the Los Angeles area, for more information please visit AltaMedFoundation.org/rockntalk.
