Ty Segall is treating Los Angeles a full-blown Friday residency at Teragram Ballroom in conjunction with the release of his highly anticipated new album First Taste under Drag City. Beginning last Friday, July 26th, Segall played First Taste in its entirety, along with his 2010 release Melted to a sold-out crowd of eager jumpers and movers filling out the room in a buzzy energy on par with the man of the night.

Joining Segall on stage is The Freedom Band, his backing crew since 2016, which includes the talents of Emmett Kelly on guitar, keyboardist Ben Boye, bassist Mikal Cronin, and Charlie Moothart on drums. They collectively released the live album Deforming Lobes earlier this year from another three-night foray with Teragram Ballroom back in January 2018. And their chemistry on stage radiates a sort of machinic grind that compliments Segall’s slurs of vocal harmonies and simplified instrumental cut-aways.

The band’s effortless dynamic was evident on tracks like “The Fall,” with its extensive trade-off between Segall and Moothart on their individual drum sets, which live was near-pulverizing for the packed in crowd. One crowd surfer surged up just as the final heavy roll of the chorus return, boisterous as a parade marching band, and floated back as Segall, closing the song, crooned, “I will remember.” In his red button-up, he was a monotone illumination under the glaring lights above, which shifted from their own shades of reds and purples depending on the mood.

Though tonight’s show is already sold out, fans will have eight more opportunities in the coming Fridays at the venue, with the same passionate exploration of First Taste along with the revisiting of his other previous releases Goodbye Bread, Emotional Mugger, and Manipulator week to week.
