The Anime Expo at the LA Convention Center on early July weekend ended with die-hard fans buzzing and new fans (who have just started their adventure in the world of anime) experiencing their first high. Where did this upsurge of fans come from – especially in this day and age?
Originally, anime used to be a niche genre culture. It’s popularity was nourished by its own fanbase – mainly overseas – but new fans in this age have been feeding into the trend.
Through the means of mainstream streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and main platforms such as Funimation and Crunchyroll, the popularity of anime in the form of shows and movies has risen steadily with the expansion of licensing and luck in the renaissance of streaming and social media.

Streaming services have picked up anime projects, and produced them on their platforms (such as “Dragon Pilot” on Netflix) or included them within the selections of content ( like “The Promised Neverland” on Hulu). Thanks to streaming services, anime isn’t limited to certain audiences, and these sophisticated platforms even allow the audience to watch shows with subtitles (‘subbed’) or voice over dubs (‘dubbed’).
The excitement, of course, continues to spreads due to our interconnectedness on the web. People read, watch, and connect in ways that were simply unimaginable in the past.
Anime has even made it onto movie theater screens and could expand into inclusion in award shows, as with CoMix Wave Films’ movie Your Name.
Overall, you can credit anime’s success to modern accessibility and the unique multitude of genres. Maybe you yourself will be drawn to the enticing nature of anime, if you’re not a die hard fan already.
