It’s Almost Time for the MOHPG Annual Tour of Homes
By Susan Motander
With May just around the corner, it is time to purchase tickets for the Monrovia Historic Preservation Group’s annual tour of vintage homes. This year all six homes being featured on the tour were built before the city incorporated in 1887. The tour will be held on Sunday, May 5 with the homes being open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
As always, docents will be on hand at each location to share stories of the homes and to guide visitors through them. There will also be vintage cars traveling from house to house. Jim Constantian will be at one of the houses with his wonderful collection of vintage phonographs playing vintage appropriate music. This year Deasy Penner Podley is supplying tour-goers with popcorn and there will be cookies by the Rivanis Baking Company.
Tickets can be purchased at three locations in town: Monrovia Chamber of Commerce (620 S. Myrtle Ave.), Dollmakers’ Kattywompus (412 S. Myrtle Ave.) and Foothill Gym (202 S. Myrtle Ave.). Tickets can also be purchased from the MOHPG website. Purchases on the website can be made by credit card or PayPal. Tickets ordered by April 27 will be mailed to the purchaser. Tickets purchased on-line after that day will be held in Will Call on the day of the tour at the Monrovia Historical Museum (734 E. Lemon Ave.).
The cost for advance tickets is $20 for adults and $15 for seniors (over 65). Tickets for teens are only $10 and children less than 12 will be allowed to tour for free. Tickets purchased the day of the tour will be $5 more in each category. Tickets can also be purchased at the museum on the day of the tour.
If you opt to go to the MOHPG website, check out some of the other products available in the group’s on-line store. There is a soft cover spiral bound book with 13 pen and ink drawings by Marjorie Brewer, “Houses by Hand.” The 26-page book also includes vintage photos and house histories. The cost is only $10 with a $3 shipping and handling charge.
The site also offers copies of the self-guided motor tour of the city. This includes an audio program on cassette tape or CD with five actors, a four color brochure, 28 color photos of historic homes, thumbnail histories of the houses, and a map of the tour route. This is only $14.75.
Any of these or a combination of them would make a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.
