City of Monrovia Accepting Applications for Youth Employment Services Program
By Susan Motander
The city of Monrovia will begin accepting applications for its summer internship program, Youth Employment Services (YES) today, April 4. The YES internships are designed to give Monrovia’s youth the opportunity to gain work experience in the real world.
In addition to working in various city departments, the city has partnered with Oak Crest Institute of Science, Centre Stage, the Chamber of Commerce and the Boys and Girls Club of the Foothills so that the interns can gain experiences with local businesses and organizations.
The interns in the program will also attend weekly professional development workshops and training. Some the subjects to be covered in these workshops will include: resume building, job opportunities in city government, and financial literacy (to better prepare the interns for dealing with money and understanding it).
There will also be speakers from local colleges and trade schools to show the interns some of the options available to them after high school graduation. This will show them some of the different options to achieve success. Members to the city staff in leadership roles will also share their own experiences and education.
The young people in the program will also be asked to develop a summer project to improve one area of the operation to which they are assigned. At the end of the program, the interns will share their ideas in what the city calls a “formal board-room type environment.”
The internships are for a nine week period from June 10 to August 10. For more information on the program visit the website cityofmonrovia.org/jobs.
