The beauty of peacocks and their dazzling plumage have inspired architects, artists, and cultures around the world for centuries. The attraction of the blue Indian species at the Arboretum becomes apparent each spring when the peacocks display their magnificent green and blue trains during mating season. Join the Arboretum for a day as they celebrate and share the history, science and beauty of these exotic creatures.

Take one of their informative walking tours and learn how the birds came to be at the Arboretum. Stop by their science booth to learn about the behavior of the peacock. Learn what the different peacock honks and calls mean. For children there will peacock-themed story time, crafts and a kids’ peacock costume contest. Grown-ups can join the fun by wearing their favorite peacock inspired fashion. Peacock art crafts include a local artist creating a one-of-a-kind peacock mural. Peacock Day 2019 will start at 10 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. on March 23. Participation in Peacock Day 2019 is included in the price of admission.

Fashion has long used peacock motifs and colors. Whether plucked, printed or otherwise depicted, peacock feathers have ornamented wardrobes from around the world for centuries. At a special presentation at 2 p.m., Christina Johnson, associate curator at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising Museum in Los Angeles, will present an illustrated history of “Peacock Plumage in Fashion.” The fee for the talk is $5 for Arboretum members and $15 for the general public, the fee includes garden admission. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (626) 821-4623 or by visiting arboretum.org.

The Los Angeles County Arboretum & Botanic Garden is located at 301 N. Baldwin Ave. in Arcadia.
