PUSD’s March 15 Deadline Looms Heavy for Some Local Educators

Pasadena Unified School District Thursday evening may have to issue 32-plus full time teachers and other employees’ pink slips.
It’s important to note that the approval of reductions in staffing were part of the Fiscal Stabilization Plan (FSP) approved in December 2018, reductions because of declining enrollment, and non-re-elected probationary employees. It is part of the process of what PUSD already cut, not new cuts. However, for some, the reality is just now about to sink in.
It’s the FSP taking effect in time to meet the March 15 deadline.
According to the district’s agenda for Thursday’s meeting:
“Now, therefore, be it resolved, by the Governing Board of the Pasadena Unified School District, that for the 2019-2020 school year, the particular kinds of services to be provided by said District shall be and hereby are reduced to the extent set forth below:

“Resolution 2490 calls for Education Code Section 44955 permits the Governing Board to reduce or discontinue particular kinds of service not later than the beginning of the following school year; in determining the amount of service to be reduced, the Board has considered all assured attrition known at the time of this resolution. Assured attrition is defined for purposes of this resolution to include resignations received, and to be effective no later than the end of the current school year, in the services identified above, as well as non-reelections of probationary employees for reasons unrelated to these reductions in the services identified above. The number of employees to be laid off has been reduced to reflect assured attrition known at the time of this resolution the Education Code requires that various actions be taken and notices be forwarded no later than March 15th of each school year regarding layoffs of certificated personnel resulting from reductions of particular kinds of service.”
