Members of Pasadena area nonprofit boards, those considering board service and staff members who interface with boards are invited to a series of “Effective Board Workshops” hosted by Jericho Road Pasadena. They will be presented on four Wednesdays: Feb. 13, June 12, Sept. 11 and Nov. 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Western Justice Center, 55 South Grand Ave. Registration for the Feb. 13 workshop is $45 per person here. Nonprofits must be based in or serve the greater Pasadena area, and registration is limited to three people per organization.

Although nonprofit boards are tasked with providing governance, resource development and leadership, many board members have never learned the basic expectations of board service. These workshops will provide the orientation needed to effectively serve on a board. Subjects include:

  • On Feb. 13, Fundamentals of Nonprofit Governance: an overview of the social sector, the role of a board and responsibilities of board members as a group and as individuals.
  • On June 12, Governance in Action: strategic planning, successful oversight, board-staff partnership, establishing a policy focus.
  • On Sept. 11, Resource Development: strategies and practices for specific non-profits, when and how to ask for charitable support, board members’ necessary role in the ask.
  • On Nov. 13, Nonprofit Financial Management: the board’s role in financial management, budgeting, financial plan execution, documentation and reporting, plus special topics like taxes and fees.

The workshop will be conducted by nonprofit consultant Mitch Dorger. Mr. Dorger is the Principal at Dorger Consulting and former Chief Executive Officer of the Tournament of Roses. He brings more than 40 years of experience to his consulting practice such as 20 years as the chief executive officer of organizations as large as 1,800 people with operating budgets up to $100 million. His experience spans a wide range of areas, including program planning and budgeting, crisis management, government relations, event management and sports management.

Pasadena and its surrounding areas are home to over 1,700 nonprofits serving a community of approximately 150,000 people, 14 percent of them below the poverty level. Jericho Road Pasadena assists these organizations by matching them with skilled volunteers who meet their operational and strategic needs and hosting workshops for nonprofit staff, boards and volunteers.
