La Salle Drops to Third Place with Loss to Bishop Amat

La Salle girls’ soccer has experienced its fair share of highs and lows this season but with CIF playoffs around the corner, the Lancers find themselves in a precarious position after falling to Bishop Amat 2-0 in a Del Rey League match on Monday.
Going into Monday’s game against first-place Bishop Amat, La Salle had a chance to make its biggest statement of the season. Bishop Amat was undefeated in league play and donned a 14-3-4 overall record.
La Salle, on the other hand, is having a hard time keeping its record above .500 while simultaneously battling Bishop Montgomery for the second spot in the standings.
Lo and behold, things didn’t go La Salle’s way on Monday as this all-Lancers bout saw Bishop Amat assert its style of play from the beginning. La Salle struggled to create plays against Bishop Amat’s stout and disciplined defense.
“I think that we didn’t come out to play as a team collectively,” said La Salle Head Coach Sheima Berenji. “We didn’t transition very well from the offensive to defensive end, defense to offense. But overall we just didn’t collectively play as a team.”
Two quick first-half goals was all Bishop Amat needed to close out La Salle as momentum never seemed to swing any other direction. The loss dropped La Salle’s record to 12-4 overall but 3-3 in league. These results put La Salle in third place behind Bishop Montgomery, who defeated St. Genevieve 2-1 on Monday to improve their record to 4-3.
La Salle’s CIF playoff chances now hang in the balance but on a good note, the Lancers are in control of their own destiny as they have a decisive game against Bishop Montgomery on Wednesday. Despite all the setbacks, Berenji is confident that her team can still sneak into the postseason.
“We have to make sure we win senior night … So we have to make sure to take care of business on our field against Bishop Montgomery,” Berenji said. “We just need to continue to play collectively as a team and as a unit”
