‘Tis the season!
The College Bowl season that is.
Pasadena’s historic Rose Bowl stadium is set to host its New Year’s Day classic as the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes face off against the No. 9 Washington Huskies on Jan. 1.
The college football season has finally reached its pinnacle with a hefty slate of bowl games that is sure help usher in the new year with a blast. The Rose Bowl has hosted its respective game every year since 1916, which has rightfully earned it the nickname “The Granddaddy of Them All.”
This time around, perennial Big Ten Conference powerhouse Ohio State (12-1) will come out west and duke it out with Pac-12 champion Washington (10-3). This game will mark the 15th occasion each side has played in the Rose Bowl. However, this will be the first time the Buckeyes and Huskies have locked horns in a postseason match-up.
The story of the game will most notably revolve around the fact that this will be the end of an era at Ohio State. Legendary 33-year Head Coach Urben Meyer (six at Ohio State) announced on Dec.4 he will retire at the end of the season. Meyer accrued an astounding 82-9 record during his tenure at Ohio State while winning one national championship in 2014 and three Big Ten championships in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
Along with wanting to send their decorated head coach out with a victory, the Buckeyes definitely have the history, experience and numbers on their side. On offense, Ohio State was nationally the second best in passing and total offense with ratings of 373 and 548.8, respectively. This was no fluke either, as the Buckeyes went up against stout competition, including heated rival Michigan, who ranked No. 1 in defensive rating.
Despite being somewhat the underdog in this affair, Washington is no slouch as the Huskies are the Pac 12 champions for a reason. Quarterback Jake Browning will be the X factor as the All-Pac 12 selection will lead the fifth best ranked offense (412.5) in the conference.
The Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and Washington will kick off at 2 p.m. and will follow Pasadena’s famous Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.
