A revival year is still in tact for Monrovia girls’ soccer as the Wildcats sharpen their claws in preparation for their Rio Hondo League campaign that begins at the turn of the new year.
On a good note, the Wildcats have already outdone themselves compared to last season. Last year, Monrovia was only able to win four total games while finishing last in league. This year, however, the team has already won six games and is poised to make serious run at the league title, something that it hasn’t won since the 2015-16 season.
Despite their solid this season, the Wildcats’ overall record is still very vulnerable at 6-6-2. The stiff competition at The Best of the West Tournament and the Westminster Tournament definitely has helped blemish Monrovia’s record, but in turn, has also helped the team grow more quickly.
No matter the circumstances, Head Coach Carlos Cuellar said his goal of making it to CIF is still very much achievable.
“Our goal is to make CIF but of course, if that comes along with a league title, that’ll be great. But we just want to be able to make CIF and play for the title,” Cuellar said following a win over Duarte on Nov. 27. “We are in Division 5 and if we manage to make CIF, then I think we really got a shot to go all the way.”
The Wildcats will awaken from their brief winter slumber when they face off against La Canada on Jan. 5 to open Rio Hondo League play.
