Proposition 10, the proposed initiative to repeal the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, was rejected at the state ballot on Nov. 6 but Pasadena voters said yes to Proposition 10. In the City of Pasadena 53,502 total votes were counted for Proposition 10. Out of that total, 29,349 votes were cast in favor of Prop 10, or 54.9 percent, compared to 24,153 cast against the proposition, or 45.1 percent.
Member and volunteers for Pasadena Tenants Union (PTU), a grassroots movement founded in November 2016 by tenants and homeowners fighting for rent control and just-cause eviction policies in Pasadena, canvassed and communicated by phone banks to encourage Pasadena voters to vote in favor of Proposition 10.
Nicole Hodgson, member of PTU, said “We are thankful for all the hard work, dedication and amazing solidarity for supporting ‘Yes on Prop 10 campaign’ to repeal a corporate real estate law, Costa Hawkins.”
Michelle White, director of housing services of Pasadena and PTU member says, “What we’re seeing now is people being moved out of the city. If you don’t have enough money, you’re just out of Pasadena.”
PTU sees the mobilization in 10 California municipalities to gather signatures to put rent control on the ballot, in conjunction with voting results in Pasadena and the adoption of a rent moratorium in Los Angeles County as reasons to hope.
