Monrovia boys’ and girls’ soccer are on opposite ends of the spectrum to open the season as the girls are off to a 2-0 start while the boys have stumbled out of the gate and are 0-2.
The boys kicked off their season on Nov. 13 with a game against Duarte that didn’t exactly pan out the way the Wildcats would have liked. The defending Rio Hondo League champs struggled to keep pace with a high-flying Falcons team that never surrendered the lead whiling cruising to a 3-1 win.
In the following game two days later, the boys looked to bounce back from its first setback of the season but the Whittier Cardinals had other plans in mind. The Wildcats were kept on their back foot for a majority of the contest, eventually falling to Whittier 2-1.
Despite the boys’ rocky start, the girls have found some success early this season, taking games over Westridge on Nov. 12 and Hoover on Nov. 15. The Wildcats managed to edge out Westridge 2-1 at home and handily defeated Hoover 5-1, including four goals in the second half alone.
These are encouraging signs for the girls’ team as they put together a forgettable performance last season, going 4-9-6 overall while finishing last place in league.
