Now that the weather is cooling down in sunny California, the winter season sports are getting underway as the Maranatha boys’ soccer team opened its campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over cross-town rival Polytechnic on Nov. 17.

It definitely appeared to be the first game of the season for these two Pasadena teams as they not only came out with a lot of energy, but with a lot of rust as well.

Despite the somewhat sporadic play, the Minutemen were able to find the back of the net early on. Forward Brenton Holstein took advantage of a defensive miscue from Polytechnic and fired a shot to give Maranatha the 1-0 lead.

The remainder of the game saw much back-and-forth action from both sides but Holstein’s lone goal proved to be all the Minutemen needed to secure their first victory of the season.

By the time this article is published, Maranatha will have played against Woodcrest Christian on Tuesday night. Polytechnic, however, already defeated Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary 4-0 on Monday and won’t play again until Nov. 28 when they take on Campbell Hall.
