Lil Peep’s second full-length album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt 2 has dropped almost exactly one year after his death. The rapper/singer was on the verge of stardom when he accidentally overdosed on November 15, 2017, at the age of 21. The release comes amidst news of a Lil Peep documentary, executive produced by well-revered filmmaker Terrence Malick, known for such films as “Days of Heaven” and “Badlands.” Initially reported by the NY Times, the documentary is expected to be accompanied by a soundtrack containing unreleased Lil Peep music.

Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt 2 is a sequel to his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt 1 and is released under Colombia Records by Lil Peep’s estate with production from the late rapper’s friend and collaborator Smokeasac and London based producer George Astasio.  The project has been strongly supported by Lil Peep’s mother, Liza Womack who has been involved in the making of the album.  “This is an important album because it is the work of a young, creative, honest, trailblazing artist… the album he would have made if he were living,” said Womack while addressing the audience at a listening event for the album.

Lil Peep reportedly left a vast amount of recordings on his laptop which was recovered after his death and backed up by his management company First Access Entertainment. Producer George Astasio and Smokeasac have catalogued his entire recordings that include finished, incomplete and a lot of unheard recordings.

The soundtrack rumored to accompany the documentary is expected to feature tracks from the recovered files. There is no reported release date for the documentary, but executive producer Terrence Malick is said to be a close friend of the family, giving fans high hopes that the project will be completed.

Lil Peep emerged out of the SoundCloud era with a unique take on emo-rap that felt like equal pieces Trap, early 2000’s emo, and SoundCloud rap. Unlike many artists of the genre that rely on melody and vibe, Lil Peep reached fans with melancholy raps, honest lyrics, and a feeling of true vulnerability. His fashion seemed to follow a similar formula that read like a mixture of high-end streetwear with a Hot Topic sensibility. The fashion world took notice, and like his music, his fashion was emerging and was beginning to make waves. The short life of a seeming roaring creative force left many wondering – what could have been? Although impossible to answer such question, this documentary may provide a deeper understanding of Lil Peep’s potential.

The rapper’s cause of death was confirmed as an accidental overdose on fentanyl and Xanax by authorities in Tucson Ariz. where he was scheduled to perform as part of his debut album tour. The release of Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt 2 comes just days after the death of Mac Miller (26) was confirmed as an accidental overdose also involving fentanyl. The rapper’s latest release includes a collaboration with the late XXXTentacion, who was murdered earlier this year in Deerfield Beach, Florida at the age of 20, also considered as an artist on the verge of mainstream breakthrough occupying a similar artistic space as Lil Peep.

Come Over When You’re Sober, Pt 2 is available on all major streaming platforms, take a listen, let us know what you think.
