The results are in. There will be two new faces on the Monrovia Board of Education: Maritza Travanti and Selene Lockerbie. Travanti received 29.63 percent of the votes and Lockerbie, 28.83 percent. Board President Terrance Williams fell short with 27.35 percent. Coming in last was J. Christian Holt with 14.19 percent. Both the new board members were endorsed by The Monrovia Teachers Association.
Trazanti wrote of her election:
“I am completely humbled by the support I have received throughout my campaign. It literally took a village! My family, fellow parents, friends, teachers and especially those who reached out to me and asked ‘how can I help?’ Many shared important insights about their observations of our district’s strengths and weaknesses.
“I’m proud of how I ran my campaign but know good and well, I did not do this alone. Special thank you to my husband, Neil Travanti, and daughter, Lexi Travanti, for their unrelenting support. Thank you to my wonderful Campaign Manager Gina Ammon who was an excellent sounding board and behind the scenes strategist. To all the moms and teachers who stood out on the corners holding up signs and spreading the good news about my candidacy.
“Congratulations to Selene Lockerbie for running a strong campaign. I look forward to collaborating with her and the rest of the Board as well as formally introducing my action items because the real work is just beginning. Thank you Monrovia, for seeing the value in having a fresh perspective on the Monrovia School Board. See you at the board meeting on Dec. 12 when I take my oath of office.”
Lockerbie sent the following statement: “Monrovians, I am humbled by your outpouring of support, and I am so looking forward to working with you to make our schools and community ever greater. Thank you!”
