The Monrovia Unified School District (MUSD) can now welcome two new board members. Monrovia voters have had their say and selected Maritza Travanti and Selene Lockerbie  to serve on the MUSD governing board.

Maritza Travanti, a senior policy analyst with the IRS, ran on issues such as declining enrollment and the resulting loss of funding for MUSD. Travanti expressed a desire to “ensure Monrovia is on the cutting edge” by placing emphasis on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs like Code to the Future, dual immersion programs, and arts programs.

Selene Lockerbie has served on the PTA Board at Monroe Elementary and currently volunteers at Mayflower Elementary for Monrovia Reads. Lockerbie ran on her “trifecta of education” which advocates for developmentally appropriate curriculum, better budget management that focuses resources on schools, and innovative programs that entice enrollment in MUSD.

Travanti lead in the polls most of the night and early morning but Lockerbie and incumbent Terrence Williams switched possession of the second seat on the Board throughout the night and early morning.

Travanti and Lockerbie had both received endorsements from the Monrovia Teachers Association.
