It’s been an up-and-down season for Monrovia football but its quality of play the last three weeks has the Wildcats feeling they have a real chance to go unbeaten in Rio Hondo League action.
The squad’s latest outing against South Pasadena on Friday proved that Monrovia is a force to be reckoned with when it’s firing on all cylinders. Quarterback Nick Hernandez was locked in as his four touchdowns and 245 yards helped lead the Wildcats to a 41-0 shutout over the Tigers.
This marked Monrovia’s largest margin of victory up to date and was also the team’s first shutout of the season. Going into the game, the Wildcats were riding a big 42-6 win over Temple City. The week before that, they also put up a good fight on the road against a respectable adversary in Covina, narrowly losing 57-50.
Friday’s win improved Monrovia’s Rio Hondo League record to 2-0, which has the team tied for first with San Marino in the standings. However, in terms of overall record, the Wildcats have yet to see their record at or above .500 at just 3-4.
The Wildcats will look to close out the season strong with three games left on the schedule. This slate includes a nonleague game against Monte Vista Christian on Oct. 19 sandwiched between two league games against La Cañada on Friday and San Marino on Oct. 26.
