Two Great Reasons to Visit Old Town Monrovia Next Weekend

Fall Festival is coming to Old Town Monrovia on Oct. 13. In addition, the Monrovia Fire Department will host an open house at Station 101 in the Old Town area. That gives a person two good reasons to head to Old Town Monrovia.

The Fall Festival will run from noon until 6 p.m. throughout the downtown area where live music will be found. Part of the focus of the day will be on pets, with a pet adoption through the humane society. There will also be a pet agility course in Library Park. At 3:30 p.m. there will even be a community dog costume parade starting at the fountain in Library Park.

Up and down Myrtle Avenue various merchants are planning special events in connection with the festival. An example is the “Fun, Funky, Fall Hats” promotion at House of Windsor. Every customer wearing a fun, fall (or Halloween) hat will receive a goody and be entered in a drawing for a $50 gift certificate from the store (and the winner need not be present when the drawing is held). Look for similar fun events throughout Old Town.

Don’t be surprised when you realize you are not in Kansas anymore. Rumor has it that the beloved characters from the Wizard of Oz are planning to pop up in Old Town.

There will even be more than hayrides ($2 a person) centering on Library Park. There will be crafts for the family as well as face painting and even a native plant sale from the folks in Canyon Park, but held in the much more conveniently located Library Park.

The Fire and Rescue Open House will begin even earlier in the day getting its start at 10 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m. in honor of Fire Prevention Week. The week runs from Oct. 8 through Oct. 13 and is culminating in this family oriented event.

This year the theme for the week is “Look.  Listen.  Learn.  Be aware.  Fire can happen anywhere” and emphasizes the three basic steps to reduce the likelihood of having a fire and how to reach safety in the event of one occurring.

As a way of raising awareness of the program, Monrovia firefighters will go to the Monrovia Unified School District elementary schools during the week. Their visits will focus on the fourth grade students to educate them on how to recognize potential fire hazards, learn about emergency alarms and about creating escape routes.

This will culminate with the Open House at Station 101, 141 E. Lemon Ave., just around the corner from Myrtle. The firefighters are planning a Junior Firefighter Challenge, a course for kids to simulate firefighter drills.

The firefighters will also perform an auto extrication demonstration. The demonstration will include an overview of the tools and procedures the Fire Department uses to extricate individuals who are trapped from an automobile accident.
