There’s Something About Mary
Mary Hansen honored by Arcadia Rotary Club
By Terry Miller
On Friday, during Arcadia Rotary’s weekly luncheon, a rather unique honor was bestowed upon an equally rare Arcadia woman for her numerous and generous contributions to the city. Mary E. Hansen was presented with the Paul Harris Fellow award for service “above and beyond” according to Arcadia Rotary President Pat Dolphin.
The presentation of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition is the Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs. It is named for the founder, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.
Rotarians often designate a Paul Harris Fellow as a tribute to a person whose life demonstrates a shared purpose with the objectives of the Rotary Foundation. Therefore, last Friday, Arcadia Rotarians honored Mary Hansen. Hansen was instrumental in donating funds needed to complete the Arcadia Rotary Veterans Memorial at the Community Center.
Mary was selected recently as 2018 Senior of the Year because of her 46-plus years of volunteer work and dedication throughout the City of Arcadia. Over the past 46 years, Mary has volunteered in many capacities ranging from board member to president for the following organizations: Arcadia Beautiful Commission, Methodist Hospital, American Heart Association, Centennial Celebration, Lutheran Church of the Cross, Meals on Wheels at the Red Cross, Women’s Club, American Cancer Society, Breeder’s Cup, Arcadia Tournament of Roses, ALTRUSA, Arcadia Republican Women, Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Arcadia Historical Society, and Arcadia Coordinating Council. Mary has not only volunteered countless hours to the Arcadia community but she has also made generous contributions to the Arcadia Rotary Veterans Memorial and also to the Arcadia Police foundation to purchase K-9 officer Zoli.
