The Pasadena Community Orchestra’s (PCO) 2018-2019 season features a variety of free concert events for patrons in every age group. The new season opens on Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. in Pasadena at First Church of the Nazarene. Music Director Bethany Pflueger will beging the season by leading the orchestra in a performance of Brahm’s “Academic Festival Overture,” Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “New World” and Ginastera’s “Harp Concerto” featuring soloist Alyssa Katahara.

Harp soloist Alyssa Katahara joins PCO in opening the 2018-2019 concert season with Ginastera’s “Harp Concerto Op. 25.” Commissioned to expand the capabilities of the harp and honor American harpist Edna Phillips, the piece features serialism, South American rhythms, and other advanced techniques not commonly heard from the angelic instrument. Katahara began her musical studies as a violinist at two and harp at age six. She is currently a Bachelor of Music degree candidate at the Colburn School where she studies with JoAnn Turovsky.

A native of central Ohio, Bethany Pflueger is an active flutist, conductor and department chair of the Music Department at Glendale Community College. She serves as principal flutist of the Burbank Philharmonic and Peninsula Symphonies, and performs regularly as a freelance player with regional orchestras and chamber music ensembles. Pflueger is a 2005 Grammy Award winner for her recorded piccolo performance with the Southwest Chamber Music Ensemble. She joined PCO as music director in July 2013.

The musicians of the Pasadena Community Orchestra graciously donate their services for every concert. PCO is supported by generous benefactors, local grants, board members and volunteers. Audience members may meet the music director and other musicians at a reception following the concert. Admission is free, and no reservations are necessary.
