Once a junior member of the Pasadena Lapidary Society, Jason Badgley returns as the featured speaker at the Pasadena Lapidary Society (PLS) Program Meeting Sept. 18 with a talk on iris agate.

Iris agate features very fine banding that shows rainbow effects when lit from the right direction. Iris agate is found at sites around the world, including areas in Southern California. Badgley’s presentation will cover how to look for iris agate as well as cutting and polishing for maximum color. Since his early days with PLS, Badgley has become a specialist in agates of the Santa Monica Mountains and throughout California. Read more at his website, californiaagategallery.com.

Also, Jared Nishimura, one of PLS’s current junior members, will give the Rock of the Month talk on ammonites – spiral shell fossils that are sometimes as big as three feet across.

PLS Program Meetings are held in the Pasadena Main Library in the Donald Wright Auditorium, located at 285 E. Walnut St., starting at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is free of charge and open to the public, with light refreshments.

The Pasadena Lapidary Society serves to educate its members and the community in mineralogy, earth sciences and training in the lapidary and jewelry arts – while promoting sound mineral resource stewardship based on environmental awareness and ethical behavior. The Society fulfills its mission year-round with field trips, lapidary workshop, public presentations, rock and mineral displays, an annual club show, and monthly informative meetings open to the public. PLS continually welcomes individuals and families to become new members.

For its annual show this coming year, PLS will be hosting the California Federation of Mineralogical Societies (CFMS) Annual Show entitled “California’s Natural Treasures,” March 8-10, 2019, in Building 6 of the Pomona Fairplex.
