It Was Twenty Years Ago Today … Foothill Unity Started the Back to School Giveaway
Foothill Unity Center’s annual Back to School event slated Aug. 7
By Terry Miller
Please forgive the homage to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper Lonely Hearts Club Band in the headline. We couldn’t resist. After all, 20 years is a long time for one amazing organization to continue to help low income kids get ready for school, with a little help from their community friends.
“It was twenty years ago today
Foothill Unity’s Magic Began to Play
They’ve Never Been Out of style
But they’re guaranteed to raise a smile
So may I introduce to you
The act you’ve known for all these years
Foothill Unity’s Back To School Affair”
Foothill Unity Center will help hundreds of families with K-college pre-registered students of qualified low income families from Altadena, Arcadia, Azusa, Baldwin Park, Duarte, Irwindale, Monrovia, Pasadena, Sierra Madre, and South Pasadena at the 20th annual Back to School event on Aug. 7.
The event will be hosted at the historic Santa Anita Park Racetrack.
Families who use the services at Foothill Unity Center Inc. have incomes at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty line and do not have the funds to furnish their children with the items they need to return to school. Consequently, Foothill Unity Center assists these students with brand new backpacks, school supplies, clothing, shoe cards, haircuts, manicures, books, and vision, dental and hearing screenings.
The entire community shares in this annual effort, with more than 500 volunteers from businesses, schools and community groups. Professional cosmetologists and over 100 cosmetology students from Citrus College will provide the children with haircuts and manicures. In addition, teachers and students from the Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC will be providing dental screenings as well as vision screenings provided by Western University.
