“Every October 17th she said a prayer, and the memories came flooding back all over again. For 68 years, a secret was kept buried deep inside her heart; the face of a baby girl, whose birthday it was. She had no pictures to look at, no keepsakes, just images in her mind, flashbacks of a time her heart was broken.” – Publishers overview of “The Last Gift.”
This story is about miracles – what Daphne Maddison’s family calls “God Winks” – because with coincidence after coincidence, and a 2 1/2 year journey, a sister and daughter was found after a secret kept from WWII in England was shared by the author’s dad, an Alzheimer’s patient.
One Amazon reviewer wrote this:
“I read the book in just two sittings. I hope it goes to Kindle quickly as I’m visually impaired and had to download a reader app to help me with the 12 pt. type. It was well worth it though for this wonderful story all (sic) the more inspiring because it is true.
“The author, Daphne Maddison, speaks from her heart with kindness, grace and most of all her faith in God.
“I would highly recommend this book for any book club. So many great discussion points and a view of what made “The Greatest Generation” we need to see. (Aunt AJ) Jane.”
Daphne Maddison was born in England and immigrated to the United States as a child with her family. She was educated in Pasadena and attended the local college, she was an art major. She has used her knowledge in design to run a successful “woman-owned” business for over 28 years; she is an accomplished designer and a prominent figure in Monrovia where her boutique, House of Windsor (named for her heritage), is located. She lives today in Upland, California with her husband of 30 years Keith and discovered the love of writing as a way to heal a great loss. She is a first-time author and was inspired to write this book to give others hope in their journey to search for lost loved ones.
House of Windsor is doing a big WWII promo on June 30 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with British flags, wartime music, English food, and of course, the Union Jack. No Anglophile or Ex Pat should miss this event.
