While the majority of students and faculty are enjoying their summer vacation, Head Coach Andrew Policky and the Arcadia football team are back to work in preparation for the 2018 season.
It’s a great time to be a fan of Apache football as Policky, who is entering his sixth year at Arcadia’s helm, has the team trending upward. With each passing year, the Apaches seem to improve, as they were just one win shy of winning the Pacific League title last season.
Being an Arcadia High alumnus himself, Policky played football during his time at Pasadena City College and then transferred to the University of Oregon where he majored in exercise science. He then returned to Southern California to eventually be an assistant and head coach at Hoover High School before taking the job at Arcadia.
“It’s a blast,” Policky said of the opportunity to coach at his alma mater. “It’s like being at home and it’s come with a lot of responsibility and deep-seeded desire to try to do the best job that I possibly can but it’s been a lot of fun.”
Along with striving for excellence on the field, Policky said he holds all team members accountable and aims to create a family environment. In addition, he believes that developing relationships not only amongst each other, but also with the community is one of the many important aspects to team sports like football.
“I think when it comes down to participating in a team sport, it’s always about building relationships,” Polikcy said. “The impact that you have on kids and watch them grow up and leave the nest and then see how they contribute to society later down the road, that’s pretty much what it’s all about.”
Policky and the rest of Arcadia football team look to finally capture the elusive league title this fall after not having won it since 2010 when they were co-champions with Burroughs.
