The Woman’s Civic League’s May 7th luncheon was devoted to honoring young women from PUSD Middle Schools who have shown tremendous growth and tenacity during their middle school years. This event is always well attended with the girl’s teachers, counselors, parents, and siblings joining them for lunch and presenting the girls to the organization.
These young women, while often facing familial or academic struggles, have all shown extremely significant improvement in their grades. While lots of awards are presented at this time of year to outstanding scholars and athletes, this award goes deep into the character of the student. Learning of their efforts is always inspiring.
Rita Elshout, the WCL Ways and Means Chair arranged for Marilyn Johnson, PCC School of Math & Science, Coordinator of Instructional Technology, to be guest speaker and honor the girls with her inspiring words to further motivate them for success going forward.
Special thanks to League member Eddie Newman, League President Lisa Fowler and her Education and Youth Services committee members for making this event a huge success. Besides a Certificate of Achievement, League member Joanie Smith created charming centerpieces at each table consisting of a gift basket of goodies including Target $100 gift certificates, Dominick’s Restaurant pizza gift certificates, beauty skin products, candy, and a Hawaiian Lei for each of the middle school girls to take home.
