Lyft recently notified the city that their rides are now carbon neutral. The company is now voluntarily purchasing carbon offsets for every Lyft ride across the world. This makes Lyft one of the largest purchasers of such offsets in the world.
Lyft estimates that in the first year of purchases alone the company expects to buy over one million metric tons of carbon offsets. The carbon offsets will fund emission mitigation efforts, including the reduction of emissions in the automotive manufacturing process, renewable energy programs, forestry projects and the capture of emissions from landfills.
According the City Manager Oliver Chi’s weekly report “this development means…we now have an eco-friendly public transportation system whish isn’t only cost effective, but is in fact beneficial for the environment.”
