Monrovia Let’s One Slip Away Against San Marino
By Aaron Valdez
Despite its best effort in league play this season, Monrovia softball were edged out 7-5 in extra innings by the San Marino Titans on Monday.
The Wildcats are off to a less-than-ideal start in the Rio Hondo League, routing South Pasadena 15-4 but losing by a combined score of 19-8 to La Canada and Temple City. Monrovia’s latest defeat came at the hands of San Marino, who had an identical 1-2 record to the Wildcats going into Monday’s contest.
In the first inning, the Titans were on the board first as they leaked out to a 1-0 advantage. However, Monrovia responded with a three-run third inning and a two-run fourth inning to open up a 5-1 lead.
Senior infielder Kaitlin Bush was one of the main catalysts in Monrovia’s offense, providing two RBIs while going 1-3 at the plate. Sophomore catcher Alexis Barroso also added one RBI and was the only Wildcat to have at least two hits in the game.
Unfortunately for Monrovia, their bats went quiet the rest of the way, which allowed San Marino to even the score in the final two frames. The Titans’ late-game momentum carried them in the extra inning as they tacked on two more runs to take the game.
