Old Town Report (3/29/18)
By Pam Fitzpatrick
It’s Spring, and we’re in for a beautiful Easter weekend in Old Town. Call it Spring Weekend or Easter Weekend, the events are the same and the family friendly feel is just the same. So, the Spring/Easter Bunny will be making friends this Saturday, March 31st, both in the 400 block of S. Myrtle (12 – 1 p.m.) and up at Library Park (1:30 – 3 p.m.). At noon Ms. Bunny will be handing out lollypops in the 400 block, then she’ll hop on up to the park for her 2nd Annual Photo-op. The digital pictures, taken by her roadies, are free and will be emailed to participants. Photos can also be taken with personal phones and cameras for instant gratification. And, of course, goodie bags with candy and pet treats will be handed out to participants. (Oh, and the pet treats are because your pet can have a picture taken with the Easter Bunny, too!)
Then on Sunday, April 1st , Calvary Chapel will be celebrating Easter with a service in Library Park from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. You’ll see six tents with lots of chairs in front of the Library. The Easter Sunday service will include live music, and all are welcome. The clean-up is scheduled for Monday, April 2nd from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. I’m told that the library will be open its regular hours during both park events.
On Sunday, April 1st, Myrtle Tree Garden Café and Market has a special ending to a great weekend. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Argentine Tango hosted by Natalyia includes dancing (or watching dancing…), great food, tapas, wine and great company and conversation. I’ve never been to one of Myrtle Tree’s events, but I hear they’re wonderful. I do, however, know about their food and wine – that too, is wonderful. One last chance for fun before Monday…
And, something really crazy (and wonderful) happens this Easter: Rob Hammond, past Councilmember, past Mayor, past School Board Member, past School Board President, and current owner of Neighborhood Pawn in Old Town, will set out on a 3,000- mile journey from San Diego to Florida. The crazy part is, he’s doing it on a bicycle. The wonderful part is, he’s doing it to raise $$ for PTAs in our community, as well as to promote other educational non-profit groups in our town. I’ve known Rob for many years now, and I know he’s slightly crazy – crazy enough to set his heart and his strength to accomplish an amazing feat for our kids. I think the least we can do is donate a bit – as much or as little as we can. Here’s the link: Paypal.me/iRideForYou. I’m making my donation right now! Good luck, Rob, and safe journey!
Now I believe it’s really Spring. Spring is happy people in Old Town, Street Fair with more fruits and vegetables, wild green bikes up and down the streets, and folks strolling, shopping, and thinking about April 21st Old Town Wine Walk. Yup, I’d say, Spring has sprung!
